Histoire

Comté de Berthier. Diocèse de Joliette. Desservi par voie de mission de 1863 à 1869, date de la nomination du premier curé en titre. Les registres de la paroisse s’ouvrent en l’année 1864. Érection canonique: 18 juin 1883. Érection civile: 8 avril 1884. Le territoire de cette paroisse comprend une partie des cantons de Brassard et de Provost. Pour description, voir M. et P. de Deschamps, pages 462 et 1088. La municipalité de la paroisse de Saint-Michel-des-Saints a été érigée en vertu du Code municipal, le 1er janvier 1885. Le village est situé à 56 milles de la station de Saint-Félix, sur le parcours du chemin de fer Pacifique Canadien. Il est agréablement bâti dans la vallée de la rivière Mattawin. Le canton de Brassard, érigé le 17 août 1868, a été dénommé en l’honneur de M. l’abbé Louis-Marie Brassard, fondateur du séminaire de Nicolet. Le nom de ce canton rappelle aussi la mémoire de M. l’abbé Léandre Brassard, ancien desservant de Saint-Paul-de-Lavaltrie, qui jeta les fondements de la paroisse de Saint-Michel-des-Saints. Le canton de Provost, érigé le 17 août 1868, a été dénommé en l’honneur de M. l’abbé T.S. Provost, ancien missionnaire-colonisateur. La paroisse a été mise sous le patronage de saint Michel de Saints parce que lors de sa fondation, ce grand saint venait d’être canonisé par Pie IX. Pop. 1,200.
