Histoire
Comté de Stanstead. Diocèse de Sherbrooke. Desservi par voie de mission de 1842 à 1849, date de la nomination du premier curé résidant et de l’ouverture des registres de la paroisse. Érection canonique: 21 novembre 1890. Érection civile: 4 mai 1891. Le territoire de cette paroisse comprend une partie des cantons de Barnston et de Stanstead. Pour description, voir M. et P. de Deschamps, pages 608 et 1262. La municipalité du village de Stanstead-Plain a été érigée le 1er janvier 1857, en vertu de l’Acte 18 Vict. chap. 100. Ce village est situé sur le parcours des chemins de fer Canadien National et Boston and Maine. Le canton de Stanstead, érigé le 27 septembre 1800, a été dénommé d’après une ville de ce nom en Angleterre. Le mot Stanstead dérive de deux mots anglais: «stan», en anglais moderne «stone», et «stead», place. Pop. 950.
